Peugeot 305 Construction Evolution
This information is based on a translation of a French technical manual.
Many thanks to Philippe Zieba, who sent me the manual and helped me with
the translation. I am currently in the process of translating the second
part of this construction evolution for the years 1983 - 1989.
1979 Models
From serial number 8085001, the engine-bay identification plate shows a figure
"9" for the year 1979.
No important modifications.
1980 Models
From serial number 8325001, the ‘305’ presented the following modifications:
The engine-bay identification plate shows a character "A" for the year 1980.
Windscreen-wiper intermittent function on ‘GR’, ‘SR’.
H4 (halogen) headlamps on ‘SR’.
Factory-fitted radio on all models.
Grab handle for the front passenger in the ‘SR’
Remote adjustable wing mirrors.
Inertia-reel seatbelts in the rear available as an option on all models.
In March 1980, the ‘305’ estate was launched with ‘GL’ (1290cc) and ‘SR’ (1472cc) versions (plus two diesel versions).
1981 Models
From serial number 8540001, the petrol-engine 305 range comprised
of the following versions:
Saloon 305, GL, GR, SR
Saloon 305 S
Estate GL, SR
Delivery van
The saloon GR was equipped with the XR5 (142) engine with modified final drive and gearbox ratios instead of the XL5 (118).
Principal Modifications
Wheels 5 B 14 FH 3.40 with 155 SR 14 tyres fitted on SR saloons.
Steering column with new switches.
The engine-bay identification plate shows the letter 'B' for this year's model.
Introduction of the 305 van
The van is equipped with the XL5 (118) engine, the other mechanical elements
remain identical to the equipment of the estate.
Principal equipment
Rear window.
Rear window heater matrix.
Reversing lights.
Wheels from the 305 GL estate.
Dashboard identical to the "GL" estate, without tablet (??)
Instrument panel without trip counter (count the miles you drive and you can reset this counter when you want by pushing a small button on the dash board)
Inertial-reel seatbelts.
Adjustable backrest on driver’s seat.
Driver's sun visor.
Laminated windscreen (optional).
Rear windscreen wiper (optional).
1982 Models
From serial number 8730001, the 305 model range in 1982 was characterised by the following modifications:
A new constructor’s plate with 9 digits to conform with the CEE standard.
Ducellier and Magneti Marelli ignition on XR5 engines with a compression ratio of 9.2:1.
Shock absorbers front and rear with thinner gaiters and Teflon piston rings on the rear shock absorbers – from serial number 8732482.
The switch for the rear window heater matrix is now on the board in front of the air-conditioning system instead of being on the dashboard.
New design for the switches under the steering wheel from serial number 8724678.
Hub-cabs with a lion symbol (Peugeot, in relief), colour : metal grey, satiny.
Introduction of infra-red remote key-fob for vehicles with central locking.
Unique to the GL:
XR5 (142) engine instead of the XL5 (118).
Transmission lengthened (final drive of 15 x 56 instead of 15 x 61). (??)
Unique to the GR:
Hubcabs from the SR (optional on export model).
Unique to the estate and van:
The hatchback has a hole for the future installation of a wiper.
The rear hatch handle is painted black.
Unique to the estate:
Rear interior trim modified.
Rear windscreen wiper for SR - SRD models is operated from the same switch as the front windscreen wiper.
Both front and rear windscreen washer jets are fed by a single 3-litre tank and pump.
Options:
SR saloon and estate
Central locking on all doors and electric windows on the front doors.
S – SR saloon
Electric sunroof instead of mechanical sunroof (identical mechanism to the 505).
GL – GLS estate
Rear windscreen-wiper fitted (optional on the van).
GL saloon and estate
Tinted windows and laminated windscreen.
SR saloon
Aluminium type ‘S’ wheels with 155 x 14 tyres.
Introduction of the ‘305 S’ saloon
The ‘305 S’ proposed in two versions, with or without sunroof, from serial number 8540001.
This model has the same bodywork as the 1981 305 SR saloon model, except tinted windows.
Electric windows on the front doors and electrical central locking on all doors fitted as standard.
The following were optional:
Sunroof
Alloy wheels
Metallic paint
Everything is ready for the future installation of wipers on the front lights.
1983 Models
Appearance of the ‘305 Series 2’.
The whole 305 range is profoundly altered, particularly the front structure;
including new engine brackets, in order to allow the old XL and XR-coded engines to
be fitted to the new under-bonnet structure (designed to fit the new XU engine). The
width of the car is increased and the front drivetrain is modified. There are also
modifications to the bodywork, bonnet, grille, front lights and a new dashboard and
interior trim is fitted.
This new modification of the 305 took the name ‘Series 2’.
In February 1983, the ‘305 S’ was replaced by the ‘305 GT’ Series 2.
